NaNoWri… No!
So, I’ve signed up for NaNoWriMo and I’m beginning to wonder what crack I was smoking when I opted in for this masochism. Basically the whole goal of NaNoWriMo is to write a novel in a month. Not a good novel, just a novel. Of 50,000 words. Okay, so it’s not that bad, but I’m woefully out of fiction-writing practice, and every sentence is proving to be quite challenging. I think to stay on track it works out to somewhere around 1,700 words per day. I’ve written 1,725 words so far. Which puts me a day behind. Already. Now I’ll be playing catch-up all month long. I’m off to a great start!
I signed up for this madness two years ago. I didn’t win (winning just means finishing). I think I was 100 words short by the deadline, which was (and still is) midnight, November 30th. This year, I must win, dammit!
Oh yeah, welcome to my blog. This is the inaugural post, and as you can see, I’m just diving right in. No lengthy explanations as to why Madness Factor is here. It exists because I like to write, and I like to share. Here you’ll find posts on many topics, including but not limited to music, writing, music technology, web technology, pop culture, Seattle, and Vermont. Hope you enjoy!

[...] When I first heard about National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), I thought it was the kick in the ass I needed to finally write that novel. The first time I participated, I came within just a couple hundred words — or fewer, I can’t remember — of “winning,” or writing 50,000 words. During my second tour of duty on NaNoWriMo, I learned about NaSoAlMo, National Solo Album Month, which challenges participants to record an album in a month, and like NaNoWriMo, occurs in November. While failing miserably at my second attempt at NaNoWriMo, I lamented that I hadn’t heard of NaSoAlMo until after I’d committed to NaNoWriMo — surely, I would have had success recording an album in a month.
