Word Count, Open Source Fun

NaNoWriMo update: I didn’t make it to 6668 by midnight, but I just now made it to 6670. I may attend the North Seattle write-in tomorrow… uh, I mean today. It starts at 2 in the afternoon, and it would be nice to have my daily quota done early in the day.

On a completely different note, I just can’t get over all the great free stuff I keep finding on the internet. I downloaded a graphics editing program called Seashore for my Powerbook. While it’s not Photoshop—it doesn’t offer much in the way of filters or effects—it does allow you to work with layers, and text. Sometimes that’s all you need. I created Madness Factor’s banner using this program, and it was a cinch to use. (By the way, for free images, go here.) As far as I can tell, Seashore doesn’t like .gifs—you can’t import them for editing, nor can you save files as .gifs. But it does play nice with .png files.

I also just learned of free novel-writing software for Mac called Jer’s Novel Writer. I haven’t tried it, but word over on the NaNoWriMo forums is that it’s a great program. I’m going to give it a whirl, and I’ll let you know how it works out. And for Mac users wanting a more Mac-friendly version of OpenOffice, there’s NeoOffice. Again, haven’t tried it for myself, but I plan to.

Lastly, in related open source news: Yay, Massachusetts!
