Music for sale online, sans digital distribution paranoia
I recently came across a couple more interesting business models for online music stores. In both models, the mp3s on offer are unencumbered by restrictive DRM (digital rights management) technology. The first store, which I learned about on One Tonne Music, is called Fake Science, and features the music of independent artists. This site’s strategy is to charge a very small fee up front for downloads—$2 for an EP, $5 for an LP. The other store, mentioned on BoingBoing, can be found on singer/songwriter Jane Siberry’s web site. The model implemented here allows consumers to choose what to pay for downloads.
