Off to a bad start
So the chains didn’t fit. Dave went to get a different set, but they were all out. I ended up trying to drive his truck to work, but after skidding a few times, I decided I would need chains for that. Went to the auto supply places around and alas, they were all out.
After much inner debate and turmoil, I told work I wasn’t coming in. My supervisor was a bit perplexed and said he had no problems getting there and the roads were fine (read: Why the hell aren’t you coming in?). I tried to explain that I am fortunate enough to live in the one area of Seattle that always seems to get the worst of this stuff. The roads south of us are great, but north, not so much. It’s a small area, and once getting through it, most likely I’d be fine. But after Monday night, I think I’ve had my fill of dodgy roads (… or I have PTSD). And there was the forecast, which predicted more snow this evening, beginning in the late afternoon.
Now the roads seem to be getting better and the forecasters are saying the snow won’t hit ’til after the evening commute. Sigh. The funny thing is, originally work said they needed me to start work December 1st, but if I could start sooner, that would be great. I thought since the 1st was a Friday, why not start on the Monday? Why not, indeed….
At this point I’d guess my employers think I’m a big slacker or wimp — or both — and I’m going to have to prove to them I am neither. This is the worst first week ever.
UPDATE: Dave found a set of chains for the car, and they’re on! I feel somewhat vindicated, too, ’cause everyone Dave spoke with at the various auto supply shops said how much worse the roads are up in our area, as well as north of us (which is the direction of my commute). A few flurries have started to fall…. At least if the roads are nasty tomorrow, I’ll be a little more prepared.
